I sketch to remember

The Sketchbook Project VOL. 14
Brooklyn Art Library, New York

Hand bound watercolour paper, gouache with watercolour and etchings, 2019.

For me, sketching is the genesis of my work. It is where I test ideas and conjure memories, or observe and interrogate what is before me. Small gouache, watercolour, ink or etched works often spawn larger oil paintings, or simply become works in of themselves. My love for travel, architecture and myth is evident in all my sketchbooks and diaries - each a chapter of an infinite sketching practice. For this sketchbook project I took inspiration from the places and memories of my last ten years of travel - from elaborate Romanian churches to an Estonian interpretation of the 'Danse Macabre' (the Dance of Death), or the vast tundra of the Canadian Arctic and myths of lone travellers in foreign lands.
