LET MY GARDENS SPEAK FOR ME WHEN I AM GONE

2025 / BALDESSIN STUDIO / melbourne design week

There is a special light inside a greenhouse.

And Lloyd’s greenhouse in St Andrews is no exception. The light, entering through the roof and walls, is filtered through the vast collection of Tillandsias covering the walls and ceiling, exposing a cacophony of green.

It was this light I challenged myself to set in print - could I capture the backlit silhouettes in a linocut? I limited myself to three colours (Light Green, Raw Sienna, Alazarin Madder Lake) and really enjoyed the endless colour combinations and speed at which linocut printmaking can test ideas.

These prints form part of the larger series of works Avant Gardener and take their title ‘Let my gardens speak for me when I am gone’ from the stunning lyrics/poetry of Emory Hall. This line really spoke to me. Creating these works has been a personal journey allowing me to honour my late friend, the ecological artist Lloyd Godman, and his life’s work. While surrounded by his plants I often contemplated legacywhat a special legacy to leave the world, a growing, living garden.

Each print is a unique state (no two are alike) reduction linocut printed on 300gsm Somerset paper using oil-based printmaking inks on the Albion Press at Baldessin Studio. These works are best displayed behind glass out of direct sunlight.

$250 each (unframed)
